Re: Winn Parish
In Response To: Winn Parish ()

Greg,

My Samuel Hilburn (my GGG) served in Co. K of Gray's 28th from Winn Parish. His sons Joseph Samuel Hilburn (my gg)and Isom Hilburn joined LA 12th Regiment (Beauregard's Fencibles). Isom was captured on Island #10 and hospitalized (probably Typhoid). Isom was sent to Camp Randall, Madison, WI and died in a Union hospital there. He is buried there also.

Joseph Samuel was sick too (other comrades were sick with Typhoid) and was discharged home where he recovered and returned to fighting Clarks Calvary and "Milt Kidd's Co" as stated on his pension application.

Samuel Hilburn was in Co. K which is the Co. that captured the Union Gunboat "Diana" that came up Bayou Teche. The Union captured the boat back and prisoners were taken. Although his papers do not state anything about the "Diana" he was listed on the roll of prisioners of war and "missing in action" When Samuel returned to Winn Parish his wife had died and no trace of his other children has been found. (I wonder if Joseph Samuel brought Typhoid back home) I would like to find information on other men in the same company to compare notes.
