Re: W.L. Alex? Russell in 11th/17th Ark. Inf.....?

Virgil,

If you remember, I said my great grandfather wrote that his father was a surgeon in the Confederate army and, he added, "with the rank of major". He also puts him in the vicinity of Port Hudson at the time of a raid. Searching the net, I just found the roster of the 14th (Powers) Arkansas Infantry. Just under the resume of Col. Powers is "William B. Russell, surgeon, age 26, born in Vermont, appointed from Texas, Sept. 10, 1862". The age fits in with my Russell's birthdate of 1836. After looking a little farther into my ancestor's family, his father was William Alexander Russell, possibly the man you referred to in your last message. If this surgeon proves to be him, I have a photograph if you would like to have a copy for the website. Am working on getting a copy of the journal, and double checking on William Byron Russell's father's name to see if the William B. fits. My cousin, J. L. Russell, told me William Angus Russell, but apparently they didn't know much about names or history. They put "Willie Russell" on William Byron Russell's grave, but everybody called him "Will". Go figure.

Bob
