Ms. Shirley,

I feel sure nobody intended any disrespect toward your ancestor. I believe what you and I have been priviledged to read on this board is simply "shoptalk" among some of the greatest Louisiana Civil War authors in the field. Besides Dr. Joiner, both Dr. Bergeron and Dr. Jones are two of the most respected historians around. I am proud to say my book shelves are full of their writings.

I too have an ancestor who left a diary behind. He was my great-grandfather and I know of at least two books in production that are going to use the diary as one of their sources. What folks like you and I are going to have to remember is that our ancestors were mortal men and women just like ourselves, prone to the same faults and frailties we are. Once we choose to allow their writings to be put on public display their words and works become subject to public scrutiny. Always, no matter who your ancestor is, there will be some favoring the positive and some not. But all are free to decide for themselves and that is what our ancestors were fighting for. That's good enough.

We are all glad to have you here on the board and would be delighted to hear from you often. Simply remember the nature of this board is to educate and to provide a means of sharing information on our subject at hand.
