Re: Jemison C.S.A. , Private Edwin Francis

My maternal great-grandfather, John Jemison and his brother and mother appear in the New Orleans Census of 1870, there is no father shown. John was 12, James was 10 (both born in Louisiana)and their mother, Mary is 39(born in Ireland). The census shows them as "Jamison" but that is not the spelling that came down to my mother and all her cousins. They do not appear in the 1860 Census.
I believe there were Jemisons that lived in either West Feliciana or East Feliciana at this time but I cannot make a connection between them and my Jemisons.
Jemison is an odd name and mother never indicated to me
that it had been changed from something else such as Jamison or Jaimison
I have lots of research on my Jemisons and even pictures of the two boys as men in later life. They and their decendents continued to live in the Irish Channel area of New Orleans well into the middle of the 20th century. My grandfather was Edward T. Jemison.

What is your connection to your Jemison?
