Jim, Edmonds did a decent job with his two volumes on Port Hudson. I would not call them "definitive," however. IMHO, because he was an economist rather than an historian, I don't think he put the operations in their proper historical context and did not present as much analysis as he might have. His research was fairly extensive, but he missed some primary sources.
