The Martello Castle at the mouth of Bayou Dupre (Violet Canal) at Lake Borne was reduced to a pile of rubble by Hurricane Katrina. There are big chucks of bricks maybe 8' x 6' x 20' long in a pile about 75 ' in diameter and about 10' high. This was a two story fort built after the war of 1812 but never used in battle. It was occupied by Confederate forces until the fall of New Orleans.
