Re: Louisiana Tigers in Virginia units.

I think it is possible Mr. Weaver is confusing Wheat's Battalion, a.k.a. Wheat's Tigers with Rightor's Battalion. Below is Alfred Chauvin's notes from Booth's Record of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and his listing in the Virginia unit from CWS&SS. After looking that over consider the two unit histories included then let us know what you think. Of course Dr. Jones and Dr. Bergeron are the real experts on this so hopefully they will continue to weigh in with their help.

Chauvin, Alfred (also Chauvin, A. F., Chauvin, A. T.), Pvt. Co. E. 1st. Special Battn.
(Rightor's) La. Infty. En. April 16th, 1861, Houma. Present on Rolls to Feb., 1862.
1st Special Battalion, Louisiana Infantry (Rightor's)

Alfred F. Chauvin
Capt. Barr's Co. Virginia Light Artillery.
Soldier's Rank_In 1 Sergeant
Soldier's Rank_Out 2 Lieutenant

NOTE: It is my belief that Chauvin, pronounced "show-van", is probably a name with an Acadian (Cajun) lineage. I am just guessing on that though.

2nd Infantry Battalion [also called 1st Special Battalion or Wheat's Tigers] was formed at Camp Walker, near New Orleans, Louisiana, in May, 1861, with five companies. Most of the men were military adventurers who were experienced fighters. It moved to Virginia and saw action at First Manassas, then was assigned to R. Taylor's Brigade and fought in Jackson's Valley Campaign and later the Seven Days' Battles. During the summer of 1862 the battalion disbanded. Its commanders were Majors Robert A. Harris and Chatham R. Wheat.
