Thanks very much for the reference of J. R. Miles. Actually, his name is John R. Miles and he was a member of Co. A, "Vance Guards" of the 19th Louisiana Infantry recruited primarily from Bossier Parish.
He enlisted in Vicksburg on January 19, 1863 and by the time the 19th LA. was fixing to leave Jackson, MS. he turned up sick and was sent to the hospital in Merdian on July 15, 1863. He was listed as sick again in November of that same year by the unit surgeon, Dr. Chauncey Philson at a place not known.
It is obvious from the information you proivided that he lingered with his illness for a while before passing. Thanks again for letting me know that his story didn't end at a hospital in Meridian. I am writing a history of the 19th Louisiana for publication and welcome any references to their service in the War.
