Fort Berwick and Fort Chene

For those readers who are not members of the Louisiana Historical Association, the Fall 2006 issue of "Louisiana History" (a quarterly historical journal of the LHA) includes an excellent article by Dr. Art Bergeron entitled "Fort Berwick and Fort Chene: Guardians of the Attakapas". Art presents a detailed history of the early war efforts to prevent a water borne invasion of Louisiana via the lower Atchafalaya River waterways.

Genealogists will be very much interested in his identification of the various state militia and state volunteer companies sent to man the two earthwork fortifications. Also involved in the defense of these forts were the 4th, 20th, and 26th Louisiana Infantry regiments.

A new membership in the Louisiana Historical Association might get you a copy of the Fall 2006 issue. Otherwise, check your local parish library to see if they have received their copy. "Louisiana History" is the quarterly journal of the Louisiana Historical Association, P. O. Box 42808, Lafayette, Louisiana 70504-2808.
