Re: LA Through The Eyes of a Union Soldier

Glad they arrived okay. No, I don't have any other letters by George. George remains unidentified, but it is believed he is George Howf, Reg. Quartermaster, 75th NY Inf. He is writing to a relative (possibly the sister) of George D. Robinson, who is given command of the 95th USCT Inf and then the 97th USCT Inf and is promoted to Brig-Gen by Brevet in 1865.

Unfortunately, I seem to know more about the people George writes about than I do about George himself. If it is George Howf, he was born in Germany, lived in Genoa, NY was a bookkeeper after the war in Elmira, NY. Never married, died March 1870 and is buried in Genoa, NY. Listed on his headstone as 1st Lieut. 75th Reg. NY Vol.

There is some confusion on how his last name is spelled. I have found him listed as Hoff, Howe, and Howf and his age varies by several years on different records.

I am still researching the writer and am seeking other letters by the writer or any of the people mentioned in his letter. If I should find out any more information on him or locate more of his letters that mention Weitzel, I will forward the information to you. If you should discover anything that might help me in my search, please let me know. My email address is colleenh@sybercom.net.
