Re: 2nd Lt. Wm Winnans James, 3rd La Cav

No Art, I am not aware of such letters. W.W. James died Sept. 16, 1866, amd possibly is buried N. Orleans (obit. might be informative). His mother, Mrs. Mary K. Johnson James died N. Orleans Jan 27, 1867, and may be buried there. Somewhere I read of an account of a visitor to slaveless "Ione", saying how the owner women sat on the porch and did their own cooking. The Mary and Joshua Jr. were married at an Epis. church, Natchez, Miss.

Joshua's original plantation was below Natchez on Miss. side. Joshua's obit is in the Wilmington, N.C., Star; it's editor/publisher was Joshua Tillinghaust James, son of John Sage James, one of Joshua Jr's brothers. The obit says how Josh' would have slaves row him from Miss. to Jeff Davis', La. home for dinner, before Josh' purchased "Ione".

Clarence died July 17, 1881, and may be buried N. Orleans (obit informative?). I think Josh' is buried N. Orleans (Masonic Cem.?), his remains removed from "Ione"? The War of the Rebellion, Navy series mentions how Josh' lied to a monitor captain, saying all the cotten in his "Ione" warehouse was his, not the CSA government's; so they burnt it because he lied. It mentions two sons in CSA service.

My very old late double James uncle, Willie Graham James (wed kinswoman Miss Leila James of Wilmington); on his deathbed, told me of his boyhood's circa 1900-1910 visit to coastal, Miss., James kin. He said how the Union people gave the James one hour to leave, the James getting all the furniture they could on a barge; and promising not to burn the plantation ("Ione"?). After the barge rounded a downriver bend, they saw smoke over the tall pines; and knew the Yankees lied.

About 20 years ago, psychiatrist, John W. Marchildin, MD (not kin); P.O. Box 5341; Phoenix, AZ 85010 (phone by e-mail only) owned "Ione".

Oh, the MS. collections of Duke University, Durham, N.C.; had some letters or something. I send the MS. collection librarian additional data, but she never bothered to respond.
