Jonathan Scheuer who enlisted in the Donaldsonville Artillery, also known as Maurin's and later Landry's (La.) Battery, at Donaldsonville, LA 9/13/1861 as Quartermaster Sergeant. Born ca. 1821 in Mayence, Germany. He was a hardware merchant property manager living in Donaldsonville at the time of enlistment. Married to German born Johanna "Josephine" Lekesch, 20 yoa, in 1859 in New York City. Died in camp on Dunman's Farm near Fredericksburg, VA on 12/24/1862 and his body taken to Richmond where it was interred in the third row of the Soldier's Section of Hebrew Cemetery on Shockoe Hill. Scheuer was know for his excutive abilities and a trusted and efficient merchant with many Cannonier friends in the Creole Catholic predominant Compagnie d' Artillerie de Donaldsonville. He enlisted in the Cannoniers de Donaldsonville when his employer Jacob Lemann, a New York resident, fled with his family to Paris to avoid confiscation of his Donaldsonville and Ascension Parish property by Confederate authorities.
