Re: Monroe, Louisiana, federal troops July, 1862

Doyle,

Thanks very much for this new information. It seems to fit into the scheme of things.

I don't have another letter until one written August 15th, when W. M. S. Boothe of the Third Lancers (25th Regiment) wrote to his wife to the effect that "...most of us were dismounted...the notorious Carters Brigade has been disowned by the authorities of the war department and we are now known as the 25th Reg Tex Cavalry..." He also reports on the great amount of sickness in the regiment, and it appears to me that many or most of the 25th stayed behind at Shreveport when the others went on to Pine Bluff. This letter, by the way, spells out the fact that the three regiments of "Lancers" did not get their CSA designation (21st, 24th, and 25th Cavalries) until they were dismounted.

One more article published in the Tri-Weekly Telegraph (August 22nd) has some bearing on this, taken from the Shreveport News: "Col. Wilkes, who arrived in our city during the forepart of the week, we are told ... that Carter's Brigade is disbanded." Wilkes was colonel of the 24th.

I think you have all helped to answer the question of what these men were doing at a time that seems to be shrouded in mystery, as the saying goes.

Thanks!
