Nic ! I asked the same question in Dec.'07 on the Mississippi mesage board. Jim Huffman (to whom many thanks are still due!) wrote me the following:

"Thomas E. Caffey was a private in Co. D (Hamer Rifles, raised in Yazoo County, MS), 18th MS Infantry.

If you Google "Thomas E. Caffey," you'll find a few "hits" that list him as author of this work.

I had to deduce his identity from reading part of the book, then searching for Yazoo County companies, and, finally, by searching the NPS S&S site for soldiers in MS units that served in VA for men with the initials "T.E.C."
