My basic opinion of Taylor has pretty much remained the same since I did my master's thesis on him "back in the day." He was not perfect (bad temper among a few other things), but he had tremendous potential. He certainly would have gotten a division in Virginia after the Seven Days if Davis had not sent him to Louisiana. Had he remained alive and healthy and if the course of things had gone the way they did with Jackson's death at Chancellorsville, Taylor would have been a leading candidate for corps command when Lee reorganized the army. I believe that he could have done greater things in Louisiana if Kirby Smith had not been the incompetent superior that he was.
