Hello All,
Several pictures have been described to me of the uniforms of the 4th Louisiana Infantry and the 9th Battalion Partisan Rangers.
Because the 9th Battalion Partisan Rangers, Company E was formed primarily of the 4th Louisiana Infantry, "Old" Company G, I was not surprised to see that the uniforms were very familiar.
Based on this, I have some clarifying questions/comments to which I would invite any additions or corrections:
1. Both uniforms appear to have grey, jean cloth coats with black taping (as opposed to piping);
2. Both uniforms appear to have eppelets on the shoulders;
3. The coats are sometimes seen as waist length, while other photos show coats as long as upper thigh. I imagine that longer coats were early war, while shorter coats were later in the war due to shortage of material;
4. No kepis were present in the photos; instead, "floppy" cowboy style hats were worn, which appear black;
5. Buttons appear to be pelican buttons, but the pictures unclear;
6. I can't tell the color of the trousers, though the may be either grey or very light blue; and
7. Belts over the coat appear to be double buckled, and no "special" buckle was apparent.
I would sincerely appreciate any additional information that anyone can provide.
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Craig
