Firearms of the Confederacy by Claud E. Fuller and Richard D. Steuart includes an excellent first chapter on arms available in U.S. armories in the Southern states, During the weeks following the Harper's Ferry Raid, governors of Southern states urgently requested arms for these armories. For instance, on Jan. 28, 1860, a shipment of 100 cases of firearms was scheduled for delivery to the Baton Rouge armory from the Watertown arsenal. Each case included 20 arms, weighed about three hundred pounds and occupied 10 cubic feet.
