Re: Jamie Roberts: Question re Confederate graves

Jamie, it’s good to compare notes, so thanks.

I see you have 2 Deville men on your list, but there should be three. I will list them by full names for clarification, and chronologically by date of birth.

1. Louis Jean DeVille - b. 1801, d. 1861. His grave marker reads:
"Louis DeVille I…….1801 - 1861 ….Todd's Co. LA Cav CSA".
Louis DeVille died at age 60 in 1861, serving in the militia for a short time period.
His 2 sons in Company K “Prairie Rangers” are listed below:

2. Louis Paul DeVille - b. 1835, d. 1936. His grave marker reads:
“Louis DeVille…Oct. 29, 1835 - Mar. 13, 1936”
Called “Louie”; He lived to be 101. He signed all legal documents as “Louis DeVille”. At age 98, he was a witness in the pension application file for the widow of David Clark (Marsalean Johnson Clark) on November 10, 1931.

3. Don Louis DeVille - b. 28 Jan 1838, d.1898. His grave marker reads:
Don L. DeVille …1832 - 1898 (DOB appears incorrect)
Since Don Deville died in 1898, and his wife, Caroline Hebert Deville died in 1882, neither filed applications for confederate pensions.

Eli Clark - yes, I know of him. I don’t think there are dates on his grave marker, but he was born 1808, died 1875. That puts him 53 when the war started. Eli and Louis Jean DeVille (listed above) were joint business partners, & built a new school house in 1859. 7 years prior, Eli married one of Louis' daughters, Caroline. At the time of their marriage, Eli was 46, Caroline 22 (this was his third marriage). Eli’s brother, David Clark (husband of Marsalean Clark, mentioned above) was also in Company K “Prairie Rangers”. If you know where David “Tobe” Clark is buried, I would greatly appreciate your sharing that information with me.

Flournoy P. Hebert – yes, I know of him, but was not aware he was at Johnson/Jeansonne. I will look for the grave marker next trip. “Flouncy” Hebert married Celestine DeVille in 1870, sister of Louis “Louie” P. DeVille (mentioned above).

Neville Johnson – yes, I know of him. Two of his sons married daughters of Louis “Louie” P. DeVille (mentioned above). Agnes married Goddie; Emma married Simeon.

Johnson, Paul H. – This is the only veteran I haven’t been able to make some connection with. Do you know of this man, his family, or his wife’s family, Pauline Fontenot (b. 1834 – 1908)?

Do you have records to confirm that Pvt. Benoit Johnson (also in Company K “Prairie Rangers”) is buried at McCormick Cemetery in Turkey Creek? He was a brother of Deneige Johnson DeVille, wife of Louis “Louie” P. DeVille (mentioned above).

My last question is this: You said the family of Don Louis DeVille still lives across Hwy 167 from the cemetery. Are they indeed decendants of Don Louis DeVille, or might they be decendents of Louis "Louie" P. DeVille?

Jamie, I have a special interest in veterans of Company K “Prairie Rangers”. Thank you so much for sharing the information you have.
