Re: Jamie Roberts: Question re Confederate graves

Jamie,

You answered my question. The descendants living across Hwy 167 from the cemetery are those of Pvt. Don Louis DeVille. The young boy that died from the gun shot wound, Louis Elvin DeVille, was the great grandson of Pvt. Don Louis DeVille. His father, Don Louis DeVille II (son of Armondine DeVille) would be about 92 years now, if living.

Do you know the name of the book at the Ville Platte library that has pictures of the veterans you mentioned? Finding the original picture would be a treasure, and worth the hunt.

Regarding Pvt. Benoit Johnson – yes, I knew he became a preacher after the war, but I was unaware of the other details you provided. Thanks for the confirmation regarding the location of his grave.

Regarding David C. Clark, Harrison’s 3rd LA Cav.
I will check the grave site you mentioned in the Turkey Creek cemetery. I won’t be able to say if this is the man without checking the DOB/DOD on the grave marker. I believe he was born in Rapides Parish July (8th or 11th), 1878, d.12/15/1924. His pension application was filed Nov. 1930, approved Nov. 1931. Were they normally approved in a much shorter time?

The record of David C. Clark, 1st Battalion, LA Cav Scouts (Union) is on microfilm #M387, R1 at the National Archives. His alternate name is given as “James Clark”, who served in the 1st Regiment New Orleans Infantry. This record of James Clark in the 1st Regiment New Orleans Infantry is also on microfilm #M387, R1. I don’t think this is the same David C. Clark of Harrison’s 3rd. If you want to pursue your idea further, the microfilm I mentioned would be a good place to start.

Jamie, thank you so much for the additional information. It has been helpful.
