6th Louisiana Cav.

An addition to my last post - Harfield McCormick was listed in the secretery of war's list as one of the medical officers of the Trans-Mississippi Dept. posted at Little Rock, Ark., from the "Sixth Louisiana dismounted cavalry,"

1) Does anyone know if that means he was dismounted as part of his service, or if the whole 6th cavalry was dismounted?

2) There aren't any records of his release from the two prisoner of war hospitals where he was a patient after his capture at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Ark. [at which time he is listed with the Red River Rangers Cavalry]. But, he is cited as later being Chief Medical Officer of General Butler (yes, Beast Butler of the Union Army!), and then, somehow he got back to his own unit of the 6th LA Cav. by the end of the war. 2nd question: Do any of you Civil War experts think he could have gotten out of the prisoner of war camp by signing the "Parole" saying he wouldn't take up arms against the Union and would serve for them, gone to work for Gen. Butler, and then made his escape from him back to his own regiment? The only actual documentation is that he was a medical officer for the Trans-Missippi stationed in Ark., where he was captured by the Union and hospitalized; then he served for Butler in the Army of the James, and then is back in the 6th LA for his signature on a Parole Of Honor [giving his word] as a Prisoner of War of the Union again, signing out June 15, 1865 at Shreveport (his home was Bossier City, across the Red River from Shreveport, Kirby-Smith's last post, under whom Harfield served both first and last). Thank you for your thoughts...
