Co. I, 9th LA Reg't

I am the proud owner of a model 1832 Gen. Staff Officer's sword belt plate believed to have been worn until the washington parish soldier was wounded at Sharpsburg in Sept.,1862. I believe it was worn by his grandfather in the Seminole Indian War from 1836-37, along with the others of Washington Parish.

I am interested in learning all I can about Richard Burch/Birch (spelled both ways) (1810-1855 or later). He served in the Seminole Indian war from 1836 to 37. I want to know if he were a high ranking militia or regular army officer, or served such an officer as a personal aide. If he were an officer of high rank, was he right handed or left handed (it matters). I'll try to attach a copy of the plate and you'll see why. See link below.

I will be very grateful if any of you can come up with the information as to the original owner of this plate, whether Richard Birch/Burch or not. Thank you!
