For the word 'name', one should read that as designation. This would be the same name or designation used by officers when signing receipts, reports and other documents.

One difference in terminology we use today should be noted. Confederate officers rarely used the term 'infantry' as part of their unit designation. The word 'volunteers' is used instead. For instance, underneath an officer's signature, he might write,

1st Lieut. Prosper King,
Co. "A", 14th Regt. La. Vols.

One receipt which uses the term 'infantry' does appear in Lt. King's file.

A similar formula for unit designation appears on discharge forms. For instance,

Private Henry Michel of Captain J. A. Hood's Company B of the 14th Loua Regiment of Confederate Volunteers....

I cannot explain this practice; I'm only reporting it.
