To be honest, I think it would be extremely difficult to verify your family's story. Not that that means it's not true. There's not that much primary material on the Louisiana units your ancestor served in but I would suggest trying to track down every letter or possible diary of men who served in them to see if they mention your ancestor. You could also try Lee's correspondence and that of Walter Taylor (his aide) and maybe even Richmond newspapers. They sometimes carried human interest stories.
