Re: C.S.A. Basic training and Officer training

I just came across a fellow who had three consecutive cards in his file, one stating he was promoted to 3rd Lieutenant, the next said he was a Jr. 2nd Lieutenant, and the third said Brevet 2nd Lieutenant. All these refer to the same rank.

I've never been able to tie down the duties of a 3rd, etc. Lieutenant. Nor do I understand the differences between 1st and 2nd Lieutenant other than the differences in pay.

Hardee's indicates that in formation, the subalterns formed as file closers two paces behind the rear rank. The 3rd Lieutenant along with the 1st Lieutenant forming in the second platoon, the 2nd in the first platoon.

As near as I can tell, 2nd & 3rd Lieutenants drew the same pay.

I believe the only training received was OJT, On the Job Training.

Kautz's 1862 "Custom's of Service for Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers,", article 574, under the section entitled "Promotions," states:

" It is a great mistake to suppose that when the commission has been obtained there is nothing more to be done, except to draw the pay and
display the uniform. In reality, the field of study has just opened, and the most competent, efficient officer finds it necessary to devote a portion
of his time to improvement, even if it extend no further than simply to keep himself posted in the changes daily promulgated, in orders, of the
laws, regulations, orders, instructions, and rules for the government of the army in its diffferent divisions and detachments."
