LA 27th Co B A Captrd Vicksbu, MS

I am great grandson of William Townsend aka Daniel. I have found there were at least 25 27th LA soldiers who died in the battle at Vicks burg MS. I am seeking more information on William Townsend my mother Louella Ryland Savage's dad and my grandfather. He likely served in Company B LA 27th as my research shows with at least these four persons listed (J. A. Marlow, John W. Cole, William Patton Thomason, and Charles Hammonds) and William Townsend may have served with those listed as dead or buried at or near at Vicksburg. To clarify my grandpa is listed as LA's last surviving Confederate of the Civil War. An article was in life magazine about him likely in 1950's since he died in 1953 my birthyear. He is mentioned in Terry SCribers book The 27th LA Infantry on page 297. Listed as possible men who also may have served with him I am investigating is listed hereafter. Anyone with any info on any of these I would appreciate an email thanks. They are P. Thompson, Minti Haycox, R.A. Jamar, J.B. Misses, Ransom Reede, V.K. Reede, J. B. Brown, James Sharpe, J. W. Cates, Joseph W. Copeland, J. W. Eubanks, J. T. Evans, H. C. Fields, L. Haddox, Jackson Thompson, P. Thompson, all previous of Company B LA 27th, those without a name may or may not have served with him are--5 unknown named ones at Soldiers Rest in Warren Co Miss buried there and these finals without a company letter identifying them are--J. B. Bowen (unsure if co B.), B. E. Cappers, A. M. Gausin, Thanks, Any link to these names may give me some info about my grandpa and who he knew and any stories we can put into a book we are writing about LA's last surviving civil war veteran. I know he was a kind man generally and my mother said had enough indian in him that we are Indian but we our family dont know what kind. He was very mannerly at the table she said in his latter years and we have a pic of him on his 106th birthday. Mother said she was 11 yrs old and he asked her to fetch his pipe, he took a couple of puffs off his pipe then said something to the order of I could just sleep a hundred years (after she had asked him if he was tired.) then he laid his head back into his rocker and passed away gently and quietly in his sleep. Outside of his war involvement and struggle to survive he was a very kind and religious man from what we have heard. Lloyd Savage son of Louella Ryland (mothers maiden name) and daughter of William Townsend. I am at svgllyd@yahoo.com or located through haynesville, LA phone book. Posted dec. 2008
