Re: research
The Chicago Mercantile Battery lost two officers killed and twenty men captured and all of their cannon and equipment at the Battle of Mansfield La. in April,1864. Back in New Orleans at the end of the Red River Campaign, the remnant of the Battery was given the cannon and equipment of Battery G 5th U S Artillery. Battery G was being transferred to Virginia for consolidation with another Battery of the 5th Artillery. Since the Seige of Port Hudson Battery G had been serving as a "Horse Battery", with 4-12lbs Napoleons. The Chicago Mercantile Battery retrained as a "Horse Battery" and and it appears would have had only the 4 Napoleons during Davidson's Expedition.
