I do not find him in the records of Nelligan's regiment. But I do find the following by that surname.

**This company was formerly Company D, 1st (Wheat's) Special Battalion, Louisiana Infantry. St. Paul's Battalion Louisiana Foot Rifles, was also known as the 7th Battalion Louisiana Infantry.

This Battalion was organized about October 1861, by the consolidation of Capt. St. Paul's Independent Company, Louisiana Foot Rifes: (Old) Company B, Crescent Blues, Louisiana Volunteers. The Battalion was broken up about August, 1862. Company A becoming Captain Rene's Company (E), C. S. Zouave Battalion, Louisiana Volunteers; and Companies B and C becoming Companies I and K, respectively, of the 15th Regiment Louisiana Infantry.

2nd Sergeant Hiram Sample, age 20, born in Penn., Farmer, resident of Trinity,single, enlisted in Company I, 15th Louisiana Infantry,** June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana, sick in hospital from October 15, 1862, captured at Winchester, Virginia December 22, 1862, paroled at Fort McHenry, Maryland, n.d., subsequently promoted to 1st Sergeant, wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and taken prisoner July 4, 1863, confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, sent to Fort Deleware July 1863, exchanged March 7, 1865,
