George and Steve, thanks for the information. This message board is an amazing help. The ORs like a lot of the material written in those days still bear confirmation from other sources when possible. I believe the Crescent Regiment's early claim to fame at Shiloh probably brought it to mind even with Union troops whenever the word Crescent was mentioned. I have found it in Union memoirs referred to as "the famous Crescent," "the magnificent Crescent," and with other superlatives of the same nature. Unfortunately, that notoriety probably caused some distortion of the facts in early histories. Thanks again.
