The Confederate government enacted legislation to permit the recruitment of units called partisan rangers for the Confederate armies. Virtually all of those raised and mustered in were cavalry or mounted units. They service was really not much different from other volunteer units except that the law included provisions for the partisan rangers to retain some of the equipment and supplies captured from Union forces. The 13th Louisiana Partisan Rangers Battalion ultimately became part of the 5th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment.
