Andrew B. Booth's "Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiera and Louisiana Confederate Commands" (1920) shows the following:

Hall, E. J.. Capt. A. Q. M., _ Co. 1st La. Cav. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, Captured near Natchez, Miss., Dec. 10, 1863. Sent from Vicksburg, Miss., to Cairo, Ill., Dec. 18, 1863. Recd. Camp Morton, Ind., Dec. 26, 1863. Forwd. to Camp Chase, Ohio, Jan. 28, 1864. Transfd. to Fort Delaware, Del., March 27, 1864. Sent to Hilton Head, S. C., Aug. 20, 1864. Recd. Fort Pulaski, Ga., Oct. 20, 1864. Exchanged Savannah River, opposite Oakley Island, Ga., Nov. 3, 1864.

He was Assistant Quartermaster for the regiment. There apparently is no record of him serving with it prior to his capture. You will find a brief history of the regiment and a short bibliography of other sources in my book "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units, 1861-1865" (LSU Press, 1989).
