Re: Claiborne Regiment, Louisiana Militia

Thanks very much, George, for the information provided. From my geneaology research, I saw some clues that G. H. Dennis made some "home visits" during his enlistment. I believe I have some information about G. H. Dennis becomng a Sergeant later on, but I need to confirm that information.

The name of the "camp" that G. H. Dennis probably stayed at was Camp Humbug which is is Shreveport, Louisiana. It was a Confederate Fort during the Civil War. Ironically, I enlisted in the Louisiana Army National Guard at Fort Humbug in September 1982 and became Active Duty there in May, 1983, 120 years, after my GGGrandfather was stationed there. It is a very ironic twist to history that I would go on to be in the "Louisiana Militia" that far into the future. Fort Humbug has a long history which goes back to those early days. The Adjutant at the 156th Armor back in 1983 was Willard G. Blackwell, CW4, who retired from the unit after almost 35 years. He came to the unit when it was the 156th Infantry Regiment.

You indicated this was the only extant record to your knowledge about the Claiborne Regiment, Louisiana Militia. Was your information based on an individual record or was it in a History of the Civil War record? I will keep my out for other info on this unit because I would be interested in where they fought during the Civil War. I do understand that from reading about other "conscription soldiers" that they did not take very kindly to men in the South who did not fight for the Confederacy. I have a GGGrandfather (William W. Wilson) and GGrandfather (Geroge W. Wilson) who foungt with the Alabama 7th Cavalry Regiment, United States Volunteers in Walker County, Alabama. Men who indicated an interest in joing this unit were often murdered, tortured, and mutilated by "pro-South" sympathizers, yet the unit flourished with 2000 men in its ranks.

Thanks again for your reply.

Jerry Dennis
