Would G. H. Dennis have been of military age during the war? After April of 1862, most white male Louisiana citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 would have been subject to conscription, at least those safely inside Confederate lines, as Claiborne Parish would have been. The only men remaining in the Lousiana militia would have been exempt from service by virtue of age, profession or another for of exemption.

A couple of observations on the Wilsons of Walker County AL. First, you may wish to post your inquiries about them on the Alabama message board. You will find many people who can respond with information about the regiment mentioned, which was the 1st Alabama (U.S.) Cavalry. Only one regiment of white troops organized for Federal service durng the war, numbered the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Unlike their Confederate counterparts, the Federal government only required one year of service, so quite a number of men passed through the ranks of this command, some from other states. Nearly all (if not all) of the officers came from Northern states.

He may not be related, but another man from Walker County named George W. Wilson served in Company "K", 56th Alabama Regiment.

During the war and the military occupation which followed, "home made Yankees" and anyone who sided with the Federal government were normally treated with animosity. Reasons are too many (and too obvious) to be dealt with here, and would it serve the purposes of the message board to review them here. Suffice it to say that since the beginning of time natives who aid or support hostile parties entering their territory are not usually treated kindly by neighbors who wish to see the invaders leave.
