Re: Pointe Coupee Artillery fatality at Fort Pembe

I do not find that they suffered any killed at this time. Peter McKittrick is recorded as being among those surrendered at Vicksburg July 4, 1863.

George Martin

From "Vicksburg is the Key, The Campaign for Vicksburg, Vol. 1, Edwin Cole Bearss, Morningside, 1985, notes:

March 11, 1863

"The fort's armament included seven guns mounted in barbette. From left to right, the guns were: . . . Number 3, a 3-inch Whitworth rifle on field carriage, served by a detachment from the Pointe Coupee Artillery, commanded by Lt. J. Q. Wall."
p. 506

March 13/14

" . . . the Southerners did not escape unscathed. One of the XI-inch shells from Chillicothe passed through the parapet, displaced a cotton bale, and ignited a tub of cartridges in the magazine of the Whitworth rifle. Combating the inferno that ensued, Lieutenant Wall and 15 men belonging to the Pointe Coupee Artillery were burned, some seriously."
