I found this obit in the Lafayette Advertiser, August 5, 1893, that someone might find useful.

Death of a Prominent Citizen.
Thomas H. Handy, a prominent citizen,
died across the lake from New Orleans
of consumption.
He was born In Maryland in 1839, and came
from an old Scotch family which fought in the
revolutionary war. Mr. Handy was lieutenant
of the Crescent artillery during the war until
disabled. He was in command of the handful
of men who defeated the United States gunboat
Albatross In Red river. After the war he
was prominent In politics, was civil sheriff, a
member of the school board and live stock inspector
at various times, besides being a successful
and wealthy business man.
