Thomas H. Handy, enrolled as a 2nd Lieutenant in Captain T. H. Hutton's Company (Crescent Artillery, Company A), Louisiana, captured and sent to Fort Warren, Boston Harbor where he was subsequently transferred to Fort Monroe, Virginia July 31, 1862, charged with insubordination and mutiny January 9,1863, admitted to C. S. A. General Hospital, Shreveport, Louisiana with a Fracture/Gun Shot Wound, discharged May 1, 1864, submitted resignation as Senior 1st Lieutenant, April 2, 1864, "I had the misfortune to fracture my thigh on the 7th of August 1863 - the union of which has never taken place. I had an operation of Resection performed [January 13] to effect union which proved a failure." Surgeon's examination noted "He is so much reduced that there is no probability of union taking place . . ." [M320 Roll 52]

The Crescent Light Artillery aka Hutton's Company, Louisiana Artillery was organized in the summer of 1863 and mustered into Confederate service at Alexandria, Louisiana. Most of the officers and men had served in the Crescent Infantry Regiment. The unit was assigned to the Trans-Mississippi Department and was active in various conflicts within the borders of Louisiana. It was stationed near Shreveport in April, 1865, and later disbanded.
