It is my understanding that a number of the regiments sent to Virginia in 1861 had troops that enlisted for terms of one year, less in some cases. The years enlistments came due in April of 1862. Re-enlisting troops were allowed to elect officers for their "three years or until the end of the war" reorganizations. In Capt. Kelso's case, he was apparently not reelected in the 2nd LA Infantry reorganization.

Col. William G. Vincent of the 1st Louisiana Infantry was a similar case. With the reenlistments and reorganization of the 1st LA Inf on April 28, 1862, Col. Vincent was not reelected as Colonel. He then went to Richmond for reassignment and was sent to Louisiana to recruit for Louisiana units. From there, after recruiting troops in the Monroe area, he ultimately became Colonel and organizer of the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry in September 1862. It seems reasonable to assume that Capt. Kelso either came or was sent back to Louisiana, where he then when through the unit evolutions mentioned by George Martin.

Hope this helps.
