We are making good progress, and several of the names have actually come from participants on the various state Civil War message boards. We are now diligently working to cross-reference and confirm these names from official documents/records.
Two names we’ve been unable to verify as yet are from the 3rd Louisiana Infantry Regiment. This regiment was among the most heavily engaged on the field and suffered tremendously.
If anyone here can provide or point to an official military or civilian record that can positively confirm these men as KIA at Iuka, please reply to this thread:
S. Gourrier, Private, Company A, 3rd Louisiana Infantry
B.F. Thelpel, Private, Company C, 3rd Louisiana Infantry
According to Yoseloff, ed., “Battles and Leaders of the Civil War,” pg 736, the 3rd Louisiana Infantry reported 9 men killed during this action. To date, 14 men of this regiment have now been verified as KIA, 4 others are confirmed to have died of their wounds within a matter of days at Iuka, and 1 other man is confirmed Missing.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to those who've already helped! Together, we may yet be able to put names to those fallen soldiers.
