It's quite possible that there were both Charles and Charlton in Company I, see report of his death by drowning. As suggested, it's best you order his records to verify.

Charlton Lindsey, born in Ohio, enlisted in Company I, 14th Louisiana Infantry May 20, 1861 in Carroll Parish, La, drowned September 20, 1861 at West Point, recorded as on sick furlough, Ship Point, January 7, 1862, Regimental Return of January 1862 records as sick in hospital Richmond, recorded as on furlough of 30 days January 2, 1862, Chas Lindsley wounded in the engagements around Richmond, Va., June 26 to July 1, 1862, one card reads Died July 20, 1862, corrected to August 30, 1862 [this file also has cards for C. Charlton and Chas Charlton]
