I do not find a record of him in the two Louisiana Crescent regiments.

James M. McDonald, age 48, enlisted in Company B, 17th (Allen's) Texas Infantry as an Orderly* (1st) Sergeant March 22, 1862 at Bastrop/Camp Terry, last recorded as a Private, present on February 25, 1864 after a prolonged absence of over a year, no further records

* Many confuse the abbreviation Ord as Ordnance Sergeant. However, infantry regiments did not have an Ordnance Sergeant in their authorized strength. The term Orderly Sergeant is the same as 1st Sergeant
