Dear Jim
The only fighting in this area occurred at the junction of Plank Road and Bayou Sarah Road (now Scenic Highway). These roads come together and form 21st Street. This where Lt. Col. Sheilds set up his roadblock around 4:30 AM on August 5th. In the fog and dark he fired into the camp of the 14th Maine. The Maine troops were camped at the corner of North Street and Present day 21st Street. The Maine regiment fired five volleys into the direction of Shields 150 troops and his two cannon of Semmes' Battery. Sheilds had four artillery horses wounded and was forced to retire. The best place to find relics would be the square bordered by North 22nd Street, North Street, North 18th Street and the I-110.
There may be relics along Fugua Street.

The Rebels of Clark's Division moved through the camp of the 14th Maine and attacked down North Street. They did not reach the Orphanage. At the area of the Catholic Cemetery they were ambushed by troops of the 21st Indiana. There could be Yankee minnie balls on property between 18th Street and 15th Street and as far north as Spanish town Park.

Early in the battle Confederate artillery were firing down North Street into the direction of the camp of the 14th main, the orphanage, and into the center of the battlefield which became the camp of the 21st Indiana.
It's been 148 years, good luck. TR
