Does anyone know any details? Not only was Art one of the outstanding Civil War historians, he was also a class act. I first came to know him way back in 1981 when I was hired as manager of Fort St. Jean St. Baptiste State Commemorative Area and he was curator at Port Hudson. Art had an encyclopedic knowledge of Louisiana records from his time working in the state archives and his publishing of several highly acclaimed books. He unselfishly shared his immense knowledge with everyone who sent him a query. He will be sorely missed.
