The Louisiana in the Civil War Message Board

Thanks, all. A graduate student had written a thesis on the role propaganda, particularly newspapers, played in encouraging enlistments in North Louisiana. One of the arguments the newspapers used was that if a man volunteered he could pick his unit and report directly to it. But if he was drafted, he had to report to a conscript training camp and then would be assigned to whatever unit the government chose. The need for men became more desperate in late 1864-65 and by then the training camps around New Orleans had been captured, and I believe the camps at Camp Moore and Vienna had closed down. So I was curious where these conscripts were being sent.
