There was a Confederate Camp Buhlow (and possibly training center for conscripts) located in Pineville on Lake Buhlow just a short distance below the falls of the Red River. The Camp was located in a small bay or cove of the lake (probably on the west side?). It was 2-3 miles (estimate) south of the Louisiana Seminary of Learning and Military Academy. In 1863 to 1865, with the exception of the time Alexandria and Pineville were occupied during the Red River Campaign of March to April 1864, the LA Seminary main building was the site of Taylor Hospital, the hospital for General Taylor's command. The LA Seminary is now remembered by a small State Forestry park on Highway 71, just across the road from the Pineville VA Hospital. I don't know if there is a marker at Camp Buhlow. There is a marker and Parish park at Fort Buhlow, one of the two river forts in this immediate area, which is on the southeast corner of the Lake.

One of my great great grandfathers, who served in Co E of the 2nd LA Cavalry in 1862, was a physician who served as an Asst Surgeon at Taylor Hospital in 1863 and 1864. IN early 1863 he was detailed as the Asst Surgeon on The CS Webb in the Red River and was later assigned to serve at Taylor Hospital.
