Steve,

George Young Kelso is buried in Daigre-Robertson Cemetery in Rapides Parish. He died on March 22, 1914. He was a State Constitutional Delegate for 1867-68. He is listed in Charles Vincent's "Black Legislators in Louisiana During Reconstruction" LSU Press, 1976. In 1889, George Y. Kelso is listed in the 1889 New Orleans City Directory as a bookkeeper and living at 201 Conti Street. George Y. Kelso is also listed in 7:12 Fall 1988 of the Terrebonne Life Lines genealogical quarterly ( Terrebonne Genealogical Society, Contact: Wanda Moore (985)876-2686 or wmoore1048@aol.com )Additionally, George Y. Kelso is on page 208 in the index of Vol. XXVII, 2007 of the Le Raconteur. This complete set is housed in the Research Room of the State Archives. George F. Kelso is listed on page 72 of "Black New Orleans, 1860-1880" by John W. Blassingame. University of Chicago Press, 2007. If you read the page it mentions other former black politicians which leads me to believe the F. is a misprint. At the end of the page it mentions large amounts of black Louisiana former slave owners in New Orleans after the war. George Y. Kelso is on page 1893 of "Reconstruction in the United States: An Annotated Bibiliography" by David A. Lincove. Greenwood Publishing Group, 2000.
To confuse you, I shall add that on May 16, 1836, Jacob Hamshire of St. Landry Parish sold Hackberry Island containing 140 superficial acres to George Young Kelso of Rapides Parish for $2000.00 half paid in cash and half due in 12 months. After recieving the balance from Kelso on May 15, 1838, Jacob signed a release for the Hackberry Island mortgage. At this point I might put forth that YOUR George Young Kelso was a Junior to the one that bought Hackberry in 1838. The preceding information is from page 8 of "Destiny in Texas:Descendants of Jacob Hampshire and Hannah Lee of St. Martin Parish, Louisiana" by James Pylant. Datatrace Systems, 2000.
I hope this helps a bit. I just now forced myself to take a short break from editing the translation of an 1800's Montenegrin Diplomatic History for a friend. Back to work now.
