Permanent Union Occupation of Alexandria

I am doing research on the Trans-MS Postal Agency in Marshall TX. I have recently researched the James H. Starr Papers in Austin. Dr. Starr was the Head of the PO Agency. I have a copy of a letter from the Post Master in Alexandria (R.M. Kirkpatrick) dated May 20, 1865. Kirkpatrick is sending currency, specie, stamps and other post office items to Starr in Marshall. While he doesn't specifically state it, the inferences are that "all is lost", we are shutting down to Post Office and getting out of town...i.e. the Union Army is almost here.

I have read where the town was "taken in April 1864" and later burned. Was there a period after the Union retreat from the Mansfield area, when Alexandria was back under Confederate control??? This letter would seem to indicate that. Just trying to understand the history and dynamics.

Thank you in advance,
