On this date 150 years ago, New Orleans, Louisiana, was the scene of further takeovers. The United States Branch Mint and Customs House and the schooner "Washington" were seized by the state, ending a month of similar events throughout the South. The defiance of secessionists continued unabated and Washington seemed unable, or unwilling, to still the confusion and unrest engendered by Southern actions.
