The Louisiana in the Civil War Message Board

Dear Listlers:

I have just completed a summer research project concerning the volunteer fire companies of New Orleans, LA, that eventually became LA militia units.

(This research is a spinoff of my more detailed research into the Violett Guards, Co. K, 6th LA Infantry.)

Specifically, the two volunteer fire company units are the Louisiana Fire Battalion/Regiment and the Orleans Fire Battalion/Regiment.

I have basically compiled a muster roll for both units, with additional information from various sources.

Neither of these units saw active field service with the PACS; however, they voluntarily militarized themselves in order to serve the Confederacy.

What I have compiled would be of especial interest to other folks researching New Orleans-area and general Louisiana units.

However, the overall story of these brave men would be of interest to anyone who reveres our noble Confederate forebears.

Note that I have not written a cohesive narrative of these units, but, rather, simply compiled as much data about them as I could find and assembled same in a generally chronological order. Mistakes surely abound, for which I both apologize in advance and lay the blame for same on certain Belgian Trappist ales perfectly chilled to 50 degrees.

My findings might be of some small utility to other researchers.

If anyone is interested in this information, simply email me at huffman1234@bellsouth.net and ask me to send you the "volunteer fire units info."

And, finally, just as an aside, thank you to everyone on this (and the wonderful Jim Martin's other boards) for all the help you all have so willingly given me over these many bee...er...uh...years! -- Jim Huffman, Violett Guards, Co. K, 6th LA Infantry Vols, CSA
