Shiloh Prisoners

I keep running across this notation on records included in Booth's. "On List dated Corinth, Miss., April 28, 1862, of prisoners of war, who returned from the late battle (Shiloh) without arms, many of whom were wounded, some seriously." I first took this to mean the men were unarmed, but I see others interpret this as amputees. Either way the statement seems redundant. If the men were prisoners, of course they would be unarmed; if they were amputees certainly they were "wounded, some seriously." There seems an awfully lot of them to all be amputees. I have seen a couple that were paroled and returned to duty which seems unlikely if they had lost an arm. Any opinions of what this list intended?
