Gaines, Alonzo, Pvt, 5th Co. Battn. Washington Arty. La. En. June 1, 1863, Mobile, Ala. Present on Rolls to Oct., 1863. Rolls from Nov., 1863, to April, 1864, Absent. Detailed at Lt. Gen. Hardee's Hdqrs., order of Gen. Bragg. Detailed with Maj. Sykes, purchasing Commsy., Army of Tenn., order of Gen. Johnston. Rolls of Prisoners of War, Paroled Gainesville, Ala., May 12, 1865. Res. New Orleans, La.

Although I can't be sure, I believe A. Gaines of the Crescent Regiment may be the same man as Alonzo. They both resided in New Orleans, both were discharged for medical reasons and I have found quite a few Crescent soldiers who for one reason or another transferred into the 5th Co W.A. There is a full year between the first discharge and the enlistment in the W.A. (possibly for recuperation).
