john murphy's 8th Louisiana Regt.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with information about a man named John Murphy whom Booth's Index lists as a 2 lt and member of the field and staff of the 8th infantry regiment. There are several John Murphy's listed as belonging to this unit: 2 lt John R Murphy of co.H, pvt. John J Murphy of co.D, and the subject of my enquiry, 2 lt John Murphy F&S, thaught to have been killed at the battle of the Wilderness in 1864.
I was wondering if this John Murphy is really one of the other two, and, if not, did he have a company affiliation at some stage. Also, what was his position in the regiment as a member of the staff? Adjudant maybe?
I'd be appreciative of some answers. Thanks very much.
